Smells like teen spirit February 22, 2008

Actually, it smells more like dog spirit. My house that is. It’s been three days since the offending canines have left my house. (See “A morning in doggy hell” for that horrid story.) I’ve finally reclaimed the house, or rather, returned it to The Toddler, but the house still retains a ghost of the doggy odor. Thankfully, it’s only the smell of wet dog and not dog crap, but nonetheless, it seems to linger. I’ve febreezed. I’ve lit candles. I’ve lit incense. I’ve sprayed with fresh lavender mist. (Real lavender that is from my favorite little oasis.) Perhaps the smell is up my nose or in my brain, as I’m still a bit ticked about the whole experience from the weekend. I know, I need to get over it…except for the fact that when Darling Husband told sister-in-law about Saturday’s events, she laughed. No “sorry.” No “that’s awful.” No concern over her nephew eating her dog’s crap…just a laugh, (more…)

I first discovered Flower Child Herbs in Riverview, Mich. when I was looking for safe, non-chemical, herbal alternatives to bug repellent to use on my son and myself when he was an infant and still nursing. While I have my own little crop of lavender growing in my garden, I didn’t have the skill (or time) to press it and extract the oils myself. I was delighted to learn that only a few miles away, lay the perfect answer to my needs, and I have been a loyal customer ever since. I recently made a pilgrimage to my little oasis, Flower Child Herbs. I’ve written about this delicious little boutique before, but now, in a way, I have the delightful opportunity to pay Jill back for all of the joy that she and her products have given me. (more…)

This has been quite a week or two for networking in my little corner of the world.

Last Wednesday, on my radio show, the Cyber Savvy Show over at Passionate Internet Voices Talk Radio, I had the pleasure of interviewing Jennifer Gniadecki, owner of Marketing Curve and the Beyond Mom blog. I consider Jen to be a networking goddess.

Jen spoke to our audience about social and professional networking and what to do and what not to do. Among the things we spoke about during the half-hour broadcast was how social networking has merged with professional networking and for those people who haven’t yet joined the networking world, key tips for them. If you missed the show, or want to hear it again, you can listen to the podcast here. (more…)

A morning in Doggy Hell February 16, 2008

So, we’re dog sitting one of my sisters-in-law’s two Kieshounds. Which is not fun, to say the least and I am not thrilled. Don’t get me wrong, I love dogs…just not this particular pair. And, for most things, I wouldn’t hesitate to help out a family member…except in the cases where you get sucked in to the dysfunction and end up enabling the continuance of bad patterns. But I digress.

My husband and I actually had a bit of a row this morning about the dogs. They are not the best-behaved dogs, and one doesn’t obey very well. I will allow and concede that they are great with kids, but among the biggest problem is that they have a hygiene problem that my sister-in-law refuses to recognize. She prefers them to look full and fluffy instead of clipping their butt hairs so that they don’t end up with a smear of cling-ons. (more…)

There are so many firsts that we look for from our children and cherish. We hold on to them, recalling them sometimes at times when our children are being less than perfect; recanting stories of them with new parents; sharing them with fellow “veteran” parents; savoring the tales for when we become grandparents ourselves. Yesterday, at my son’s 2-year-old well baby appointment, while we waited for his pediatrician to see us after doing the usual battery of tests with the nurse, we sat down and read a book together. His latest obsession is anything alphabet related, especially Dr. Suess’s ABC book.  But I didn’t bring his beloved Seuss with us, for fear of accidentally leaving it behind and instead took along the Whinny the Pooh book of ABC’s, which requires a bit more creativity on Mama’s part, supplying an oral storyline to the images that accompany each letter. I‘ve been on a quest for flushable wipes for my son. We use flushable diapers (G-Diapers) when we’re at home and Seventh Generation for night time and when we’re out. I also tend to flush his solid waste, both in an effort to not have it end up in the garbage and to show him where it goes now that he’s expressed an interest in the toilet and its functions. This presented a problem of course, when it came to disposing the diaper after wiping him…what to do with the wipes. Hence my quest. (more…)

In my own parenting, I try to be respectful of the parenting styles of others. You never know what the circumstances are or any other number of issues for parenting decisions. We’re also only as good as the tools that we’ve got, and with that in mind, I try not to judge—some people’s toolboxes aren’t as complete as others’. Then I read something so rediculous, that I can’t help but not just comment about it, I’m compelled to blog about it.

In searching for an answer to my own latest toddler drama—day three of refusal to drink milk—I decided to Google it. Okay, that was my first mistake. I should have gone straight to What to Expect The Toddler Years, or to my tried and true parenting sisters at babytalkbio.com.  I’d called my mom, but she wasn’t home, and I was at my wit’s end after having played “Bad Mama” telling my milk-avoiding boy: “no more juice. You’ve had enough today. You can have milk or water,” and the kind of tantrum in reply that breaks your heart. (more…)

The last week and change has been spent fighting the War on Germs. Mama lost the battle, and for the last three days, she has found herself trying to reclaim her former good health.

I should not be surprised. I always get a cold this time of year. Even the year that my son was born, I was not exempt. And apparently, I seem to have shared this annual tradition with the little guy. I should have seen it coming. (more…)
